Developed in the UK, these credit-card-sized computer boards were originally designed to aid the teaching of computer science in schools. However, their combination of small size and big capabilities has made them into a phenomenon. Robotics enthusiasts have already shown how to adapt a Raspberry Pi controller or kit for an extraordinary range of applications.

Many users put these single-board computers to work as media boxes, or simply as low-powered but lightweight computers for everyday use. More inventive types have used them as the basis for a range of devices, such as digital cameras. However, they have also been used to power a range of robotics builds with varying degrees of complexity. As standard, they run a custom Linux-based operating system called "Raspbian" or any one of several other Linux distributions that are made available for the system.

Pi boards can be purchased as stand-alone boards or as part of a kit.
