Active Robots join Glyndwr University for new postgraduate course

Glyndwr University has announced the creation of a new postgraduate course in robotics, with the aim of helping ambitious students to gain a Master’s degree in this highly technical subject, fuelling the next generation of robotics research.

The course itself will involve the use of the Baxter Research Robot, which is a cutting-edge machine capable of pushing the boundaries of interactivity. Students will not just be studying theory, but will also get direct experience of creating applications which can be deployed with the help of class-leading robots. Students will be able to create apps that can tackle everything from machine vision to the deceptively simple concept of grasping, according to Professor Vic Grout.

Professor Grout said that robots are not just going to make life more convenient for humans in the future. They will also provide protection and care for people once systems of control have been perfected. He was keen to emphasise the idea that the work done at Glyndwr University was not carried out in a vacuum, and that the new Masters course would take into account the socioeconomic and political impact of robotics research and development

Active Robots managing director Antony Lovedale made a recent visit to the campus with the Baxter Research Robot and demonstrated its potential to students and staff. Ultimately, this technology will enable students to enter the workforce of the future, of which robots will constitute a significant part.
