Encoders

Encoders are small, precise devices that measure the rate of rotation of an object. The most common application for an encoder is to attach it to the shaft of a motor to keep track of the relative position of the motor.

With the proper calculations, this information can also be used to determine angular velocity and acceleration.

Encoder interfaces are boards specially designed to read the pulses from the encoder and convert it into encoder position.
